HOUSTON – The Houston Health Department confirmed Thursday that a mosquito sample collected in the Heights area has tested positive for West Nile virus, marking the city’s first confirmed case of the 2025 season.
The sample was collected earlier this week near West 11th Street and Heights Blvd., an area known for high mosquito activity following recent rain.
“This doesn’t mean there’s an outbreak,” said Dr. Aisha Rollins, Deputy Director of Environmental Health. “But it does mean people need to take precautions now.”
So far, no human cases have been reported, but the department is increasing mosquito spraying in the immediate area and surrounding neighborhoods as a preventive measure.
🦟 City Officials Urge Residents To:
- Use insect repellent containing DEET
- Eliminate standing water around the home
- Wear long sleeves and pants outdoors at dawn and dusk
The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites. In rare cases, it can cause severe neurological illness.
“The best defense is awareness,” Dr. Rollins added.
